Redbook Project

Q&A with Artists

Berlin 2016, at the famous Bethanien in the heart of Kreuzberg-that’s where the story of The Redbook Project began. Singer and leader MAXX joined a preparation class and ended up studying with Drummer Bruno and Pianist Lukas. It didn’t take her long to get both of them on board to form a band, starting off mixing soul, pop, jazz and Hip-hop. Soon after, bassist Aike joined the group and completed ‘’the constellation’’. The very first Song “This heart is free” became a prophecy for the Band. Playing together and growing closer they quickly set their vision. Instead of mixing various genres they focused on freely experimenting with what drives them, putting that into sound to create their own identity. “Bring in what you got” is the motto that each member of the band delivers in their rawest form. You can find a perfect example of this raw identity in one of their latest songs “Supernova” dealing with the bright and dark sides within each of them and the will to give everything to achieve their dreams. “Eventually we’ll burn out, but at least we’ve been alive (…)” 3 years later and The Redbook Project is still together, even though vocalist and band leader MAXX moved to the Netherlands to study Jazz and Pop music, the rest are in Berlin. Lukas is currently studying at Universität der Künste (UdK) for a Bachelor as a Tonmeister, Aike just finished his qualification to be a Sound-engineer and Bruno is building his own Label and is involved with a few different projects. The freedom to express what’s on their minds has become the main drive for the band. The flow, joy of rhythm and sound and the capability to create something of importance, is what keeps them inspired. They are constantly striving to release a message of encouragement, to not always follow the easy route but to be bold enough to figure out who you are and how you can contribute to what’s around you. Coming this November The Redbook Project releases their next Single ‘’Ascending Vibes’’ and have two more planned for 2020. With their Partners Calyra and Rehegoo, they are also looking forward to doing a mini-tour in and a load of gigs in 2020. Stay tuned!

How would you describe your style?

Out style is a loose mixture of soul-pop, Jazz, Hip-Hop and a big portion of ourselves.

Why do you do what you do?

What we are doing is creating music, without the pressure of fulfilling external requirements. We and many others are tired of music that is produced by the same patterns, trying to reach a mass as big as possible. Love, spirit and individuality are completely lost that way. We are creating music that comes from inside us, with all the components that we want and that we perceive as suitable. We want to contribute artistically to society with music that is different but enjoyable, music you can listen to over and over and always feel something new.

Ambition or talent: which matters more to you?

Both matters equally!! You can be damn talented, but without the right ambition, it won’t play out the way you want it to. Vice versa, if you are  less talented but extremely ambitious, you can gain the same level of professionalism as a naturally talented musician.

What inspires you to create music?

It’s an inner drive. We all experience so much every single day, feeling so many emotions throughout our lives that it is important to find a way to express the insights you gain from it all. For us it’s music that helps us express our experiences and  gives us the chance to reach out to people. We hope that the people listening to our music, can connect to it and receive strength during hard times and happiness in times of celebration.

How did you find the scouting process in Rehegoo?

Easy. Rehegoo contacted us, we checked out your website to learn more and replied. Everything else was easy with Rehegoo. The communication was simple, friendly and information was given quickly and clearly.

How did you feel when signing a contract with Rehegoo?

We were excited and curious. It’s always nice to find a new partner in “crime” 😉

What is the greatest achievement of your career so far?

Releasing our first EP ‘’Changing Shapes’’, was one of the bigger achievements I think. Also to me and the Band it’s a big deal that we found a way to work where we all can be     ourselves and speak freely and honestly with one another. Maybe you ask yourself why this is a great achievement for us? For the music we make, it is necessary to trust each other to really make it spark. We’ve seen many bands break up for ridiculous reasons. With our Leader and Singer MAXX, living in the Netherlands now it’s even more important to have a strong relationship between us all.

What is the best and worst gig you have ever played?

There is one gig that fits both. it was the best and worst gig ever for us. It was at our release party last year. it was an amazing concert and a great night. We had a beautiful location, our photographer was exhibiting the photos of us, the crowd was bigger than expected and there was a really good mood. So it was just the kind of night where you want to publicise your work. However we also managed and organised everything ourselves for months and some things went wrong, so as you can imagine, it was extremely stressful too. It was all worth it though!
